Job Summary:
At Bucknell Public Safety, our mission is to enhance the quality of life, safety, and security of our community. University police officers are responsible for maintaining a safe and secure environment for the university community. This position involves patrolling campus grounds, responding to emergencies, conducting investigations, and collaborating with local law enforcement agencies. The Public Safety Officers work to ensure the well-being of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. All members of the Public Safety Division are expected to contribute to Bucknell's commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

This is a full-time, 12-month, staff non-exempt position, offering a competitive salary and robust benefits package.

In addition to the competitive salary we will be providing additional shift differentials for both second and third shift in the amount of $1.25/hour.

The Public Safety Officer opportunity is eligible for a $2,500 hiring bonus in accordance with program guidelines.

Job Duties:
  • To know and enforce university policies and regulations, local, and state laws. Patrol by foot, bike, or vehicle University properties, surrounding areas and neighborhoods as assigned, in an effort to deter incidents. Properly and safely carry and use, when necessary, various law enforcement devices. Respond to emergencies and incidents in a timely manner; determine the appropriate course of action and notify law enforcement officials or other members of the campus community as appropriate. Provides police and customer services, which include enforcing laws and regulations, de-escalation, problem solving, first aid and general assistance as required
  • Support the crime deterrence and safety mission on campus. Gather and compile information, write reports, and disperse to appropriate parties for criminal, fire, incident, or accident investigations, or for medical or hazardous conditions. Enforce campus traffic and parking regulations; issue tickets and/or citation or warnings as necessary.
  • Provide students and employees safe escort services within the main campus geography as requested. Respond to requests in a timely and courteous manner. Respond to a variety of alarms such as fire, burglary, and other supervisory alarms. Assist in conducting alarm testing and evacuation drills. Respond to other types of alarms. Maintain traffic details and crowd control for special events.
  • Familiarization with all record keeping systems and processes for data entry. To assist members and guests of the University in whatever manner possible in Public Safety related problems and issues. - Attend training classes and departmental meetings as required. All Public Safety Officers are also Campus Security Authorities as defined by the Clery Act.
  • All other duties as assigned.


Minimum Requirements:

  • Possess a high school diploma

  • Have the ability to possess and or maintain Act 120 standards in accordance with PA law. Must be able to obtain PA Act 120 certification; Act 2; or Act 120 equivalent for out of state candidates. We will review prior military police and other Law enforcement related training certifications to determine if it meets the requirements. We may also sponsor candidates to an Act 120 training program An employment contract between the candidate and Bucknell is a requirement of sponsorship.

  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid PA vehicle license

  • Demonstrates good written and oral communication skills

  • Demonstrates the ability to interact sensitively and effectively with members of an academic community

  • Must be available to work weekends and some holidays

  • Must be able to pass a background check for JNET clearance

  • Must be able to maintain Act 120 & ACT 235 standards including vision requirements

    Physical Demands:

    The Public Safety Officer will be required to lift, move, push, pull, or carry materials weighing from 20 to 50 lbs. Regular walking, biking, and driving is required. Must be able to run, bend, lift, and climb as required. Must be able to quickly respond to critical incidents. Must be able to wear body armor.

      The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.

      This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.
