Description
Summary
Performs communications dispatch and a variety of general office and clerical duties for Campus Police Services such as, but not limited to, response to emergency calls, completing paperwork for uniformed staff, parking enforcement, and assisting with incident reporting.

The Dispatcher performs a range of general clerical and communications duties. This position requires a demonstrated ability to work with outside groups and complete an approved Dispatcher Course.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Knowledge and Skills
The position requires a working knowledge of general police dispatching procedures, equipment, and practices, police "10" code, and policies and procedures relative to dispatching. Requires a basic knowledge of general municipal court procedures and processes with regard to processing of traffic and parking citations and basic Uniform Crime Report reporting requirements and procedures. Requires a working knowledge of office practices, procedures and equipment, including filing systems, receptionist and telephone techniques, and letter and report writing. Requires a working knowledge of personal computer-based software programs that support this level of work, including but not limited to word processing, spreadsheet, and database software used in education and law enforcement. Requires business mathematics skills to compute sums and statistics. Requires skill using the English language, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Requires sufficient human relations skills to make present a positive image of the College and the department, convey technical information to others, and use sensitivity in dealing with a diverse population.
Abilities
Requires the ability to perform in an open environment with interruptions and distractions. Requires the ability to operate a radio communications base station to dispatch Police Officers and/or other personnel. Must be able to learn, interpret, explain and apply knowledge of District and department organization, operations, programs, functions and special department terminology when performing assignments. Must be able to learn and sign DMV and criminal justice releases. Requires the ability to arrange, organize and prioritize work in order to meet schedules and timelines. Requires the ability to memorize alphanumeric data for immediate communications. Requires the ability to work cooperatively with staff, current and prospective students, external organizations, and the public using patience and courtesy. Requires the ability to use a personal computer to produce correspondence and reports, and type/keyboard accurately. Requires the ability to maintain confidentiality of private and sensitive information. Requires the ability to complete police standards training (California P.O.S.T.) in dispatch and earn a certificate for access to law enforcement databases (CLETS/NCIC). Requires the ability to maintain productive and cooperative working relationships with others.
Physical Abilities
The position incumbent must be able to function indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature. Requires ambulatory ability to sit for extended periods of time, to use microcomputers and peripheral equipment, accomplish other desktop work, and to move to various campus locations. Requires the ability to use near vision to read printed materials. Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone. Requires manual and finger dexterity to write, use a pointing device and keyboard at an advanced rate, operate microcomputer, and to operate other standardized office equipment, almost constantly requiring repetitive motions.
Licenses and Certificates
May require a valid driver's license. Requires California P.O.S.T. certificate within 6 months of employment. Working Conditions Work is performed indoors where minimal safety considerations exist.
Conditions of Employment
This is a full-time, 12-calendar month classified position
Hours of employment are:
Monday through Friday 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Initial placement of employees on Classified Salary schedule is at Step 1. After six months of successful probationary employment, employee is placed at Step 2.Employment is to be effective as soon as possible following completion of the selection process.
Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, Federal Bureau of Investigation (no fee if obtained at Cerritos College Campus Police Station), produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results (must be within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a school district in California) before employment.
Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per Government Codes 3100-3109.

Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
The position requires a High School diploma, or the equivalent, and two years of clerical experience in a public safety or judicial environment.
Preferred Qualifications:
At least one year of experience in dispatching work involving the operation of radio communications equipment; or as an operator of a telephone switchboard or console in a college environment.
