JOB SUMMARY: Performs various duties associated with the maintenance and operation of a jail facility. Performs administrative and clerical duties, as directed.
REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES
Takes custody of prisoners from arresting officers.
Controls the movement and activities of prisoners.
Searches prisoners.
Books and processes prisoners including photographing and fingerprinting.
Obtains on-site medical clearances for prisoners.
Transports and releases prisoners after booking them into the system.
Ensures the security, health, safety and well-being of prisoners.
Serves meals to prisoners.
Quells disturbances and maintains order in the facility.
Performs routine clerical duties related to custodies and the facility.
Completes thorough and accurate written reports.
Ensures Title 15 Regulations are adhered to.
May perform basic custodial duties.
Performs other related duties, as assigned.
KSAs AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills:
Knowledge of:
Clerical practices and procedures.
Principles and practices used in dealing with the public.
Effective customer service techniques.
Ability to:
Read, comprehend and apply basic penal and vehicle codes and count procedures.
Learn and apply first aid techniques.
Handle prisoners under difficult and stressful conditions.
Understand departmental policy and procedures.
Follow written and oral instructions.
Interact effectively and sensitively with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
Establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with City employees and the public.
Provide effective customer service.
Skill in:
Operating motor vehicles and office equipment.
The use of a personal computer and applicable software applications.
Education, Training and Experience:
Graduation from high school or the equivalent.
One year of recent, paid work experience involving public contact. Experience working for a police department is desirable.
Licenses and Certificates:
Possession of a valid Class C driver license.
Upon hire must complete a 10-week Detention Officer Academy that requires both physical and academic requirements. Failure to successfully complete this course will result in termination.
SUPERVISION AND WORKING CONDITIONS
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Public Services Administrator - Jail and/or designee who outlines work and frequently and carefully reviews work.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Leads and coordinates custodial staff and provides technical oversight to sworn personnel, as needed, when in the jail, including enforcing rules and regulations, and providing information and instruction.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is generally performed in a fast-paced environment where noise and odors are encountered, as well as biohazards such as blood. Some tasks may require respiratory protection. Physical demands include retraining and moving combative subjects which may require motions such as dragging, pulling, lifting, carrying and supporting up to 165 pounds. Must be able to work weekends, evenings, holidays and/or irregular hours.
