Department Profile

The Cerritos College Police Department (CCPD) is a full-service police agency, sworn to protect and support the students and staff of Cerritos College. We are comprised of 11 full-time police officers, 2 command officers, 3 full-time dispatchers, and a host of college cadets who patrol the campus 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

Summary
Receives, inventories, stores, controls, and preserves evidence and property connected with criminal activities, and lost and found property. Maintains inventory systems and ensures that chain of evidence is preserved. Assists in overall coordination of the parking program. Serves as the employee transportation coordinator and liaison with South Coast Air Quality Management District.

Distinguishing Career Features

The Police Services Assistant is a clerical and logistics oriented position that provides customer service to College staff, students, and visitors. The position also provides assistance as needed to facilitate the parking and police functions of the Department.

Job Duties
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Transportation and Parking

  • support to the College's parking programs. Issues permits and explains parking rules and locations applicable for the permit.
  • Serves as the College's air quality coordinator for staff and student transportation matters. Provides information to staff and students relating to car pools and alternative forms of transportation. Creates incentives such as special parking permits and locales.
  • Prepares environmental/air quality reports to outside regulatory agencies. ? Coordinates daily parking activity. Assigns traffic control officers to parking lot coverage.
  • Receives parking citations issued, accumulates and determines fee total, and forwards documents to a third party accounts receivable service provider.
  • Serves as a point of contact for appeals and adjustments to fees and fines relating to parking. Handles first level citation appeals and coordinates appeals as needed. May testify in court regarding parking citations.
  • Provides logistics and staffing support to large scale campus events. Provides directions and traffic routing schemes to minimize bottlenecks. Sets up and/or arranges traffic routing networks and for hourly staff to provide directions. Police Property and Evidence
  • Receives, inventories, and stores stolen, abandoned, and found property, including an array of personal property items, technological devices, jewelry, and money.
  • Receives, inventories, and stores a variety of crime scene materials collected for analysis and/or evidence, which may include property listed above, narcotics, chemicals, and weapons.
  • Maintains accurate inventory and records of all property and evidence, properly marking, tagging, and packaging evidence and property according to established procedures.
  • Retrieves and transports evidence from crime scenes. Transports evidence to state laboratory for analysis.
  • Ensures chain of evidence is clearly preserved whenever evidence is received or is removed from property room. May assist detectives and officers with showing and identifying evidence in court. May testify as to the chain of evidence or other matters.
  • Researches police reports and other documents to determine ownership of property or evidence. Works directly with the public, both on the telephone and in person, answering questions about evidence being held and lost property.
  • Evaluates public requests for release of evidence and property. Verifies that cases are completed or limitation has run out before releasing property. Takes photographs of property and evidence used in criminal cases before releasing it as appropriate.
  • Checks case reports for authorization to dispose of evidence and property. Assists in the disposal of evidence and unclaimed property through destruction or auctions. Purges items from inventory records.
  • Maintains currency of knowledge and skills related to the duties and responsibilities.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
The position requires a high school diploma or equivalent, and two years of public safety community service experience. Police department experience is preferred.

Requires a working knowledge of and skill at accessing, entering and retrieving information to and from computer-aided databases such as those for parking and law enforcement, and using common office productivity software. Requires sufficient math skills to compute sums, distances, and measurements. Requires sufficient English language skills to prepare evidence descriptions. Requires sufficient human relation skills to convey technical concepts to others and to explain procedures. Physical Abilities

Requires the ability to function indoors and outdoors performing work of an active nature. Requires sufficient ambulatory ability to stand and walk for extended distances. Requires strength to lift, push, pull, and place medium weight items (under 50 pounds) onto shelves on a sustained basis. Requires sufficient hand-eye coordination to operate office equipment and a motor vehicle. Requires sufficient visual acuity to recognize moving objects at a distance, people, and printed material. Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and on the telephone.

Licenses and Certificates

Working Conditions
Work is performed indoors and outdoors where minimal safety considerations exist.

Salary/Fringe Benefits

Grade 25 on District Classified Salary Schedule ($3,692.42 -$4,428.74/month).

Health and welfare benefits include District contribution for medical/dental/vision benefits and employee life insurance ($50,000). (Cash in lieu option available on medical insurance.)

Participation in the Public Employee's Retirement System that is also integrated with Social Security

Conditions of Employment

This is a full-time, 12-calendar month classified position

Hours of employment are:

Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Initial placement of employees on Classified Salary schedule is at Step 1. After six months of successful probationary employment, employee is placed at Step 2.

Employment is to be effective as soon as possible following completion of the selection process.

Individual who is offered employment shall be required to obtain fingerprints for a criminal history clearance through the State Department of Justice and remit the required fee for processing the fingerprints, Federal Bureau of Investigation (no fee if obtained at Cerritos College Campus Police Station), produce an original social security card, and submit negative TB test results (must be within the past four years or within the last 60 days if not previously employed in a school district in California) before employment.

Proof of eligibility to work in the United States and signing of loyalty oath per Government Codes 3100-3109.

Board Policy 2905 requires mandatory COVID-19 vaccinations as a condition of employment.
